Bard College students establish a pro-Palestinian encampment

Bard College students established a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus outside Hegeman Hall Wednesday night, joining university students nationwide who have been protesting Israeli and American actions in the ongoing Israel-Hamas War in Gaza.

Organized through the Bard student group Student Justice for Palestine (SJP), the protest is called a “Popular University for Gaza,” and was initially established Tuesday, though students did not begin camping overnight until Wednesday.

“We want to make sure everyone in our community is aware of our demands,” said Ari, a Bard student who requested to be identified only by their first name. “We want every single person who wants to engage with Palestine to come here and learn.”

As of Thursday afternoon, the encampment consisted of about 20 tents and two canopy tents, one quiet space with books where students can study for the ongoing finals and another where they can gather for chants, speeches, or “teach-ins” led by Bard professors.
